NFFL Condemns Fake News, Commends President Tinubu’s Confidence in Chief of Staff

By Saint Mugaga

The National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) has strongly condemned the circulation of fake news and malicious reports aimed at discrediting the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

In a press statement issued on Friday, 26 December 2025, the National Coordinator of the Forum, Rt. Hon. Raphael Nnanna Igbokwe, described the false reports as fruitless attempts by enemies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government to sow discord within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

According to the statement, “The attention of the public has been drawn to the circulation of false, misleading, and malicious reports by some detractors aimed at discrediting the Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The Forum stated that it “strongly and unequivocally condemns the spread of fake news, misinformation, and unfounded allegations against the Chief of Staff,” noting that such narratives are deliberately designed to malign his person, distract the Presidency, and undermine effective governance.

The NFFL emphasized that Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has continued to demonstrate exceptional professionalism, integrity, discipline, and dedication to national service. His leadership and administrative coordination, the Forum noted, have been instrumental in supporting the effective implementation of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Forum also expressed its appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in the Chief of Staff.

“We equally seize this opportunity to express our profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the confidence reposed in the Chief of Staff. Mr. President’s trust reflects his unwavering commitment to merit, competence, and effective governance. This confidence has further strengthened institutional stability within the Presidency and reinforced public trust in the administration,” the statement read.

While acknowledging that the Presidency has already debunked the reports describing them as malicious and baseless, the NFFL warned that the deliberate spread of fake news poses a serious threat to national unity, democratic governance, and public order.

“Freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and must not be abused to spread lies or malign public officials,” the Forum warned.

Consequently, the NFFL disclosed that it would petition relevant security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for the criminal act, to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We express absolute confidence in the person and capacity of Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, whom we regard as a worthy ambassador of our Forum and a strong pillar of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu–led administration,” the statement concluded.

Torres Strikes in Extra-Time As Spain Down Argentina To Claim Second World Cup

A 106th-minute strike from Ferran Torres secured Spain a second FIFA World Cup title on Sunday, as the European champions edged Argentina 1-0 in a tense final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.

Torres proved the difference in extra-time, latching onto a knock-down from substitute Nico Williams and rifling a powerful shot past Emiliano Martinez to break Argentine resistance and spark wild celebrations among the Spanish side.

The win gives Spain a sixth major tournament triumph in seven attempts, adding to their 2010 South Africa title and cementing their status as the dominant force in modern international football.

It was a final of fine margins. Argentina, the 2022 champions, came with a spoiling game plan and spent much of the night absorbing pressure. Martinez kept them alive with a string of saves, including a superb stop to deny Lamine Yamal’s free-kick in the dying seconds of normal time, and another crucial block from Williams’ header in extra-time.

Williams thought he had done enough when his header found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul by substitute Mikel Merino on Nicolas Otamendi.

The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute. Williams rose to meet a cross and headed it back across goal, where Torres was waiting inside the six-yard box. The Barcelona forward made no mistake, smashing his effort into the roof of the net to send Spain ahead.

Argentina’s task was made harder just before extra-time when Enzo Fernandez was shown a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsi. The midfielder, already booked, left La Albiceleste to play the entire extra period with 10 men.

It proved costly. With Argentina unable to mount sustained pressure, Spain dominated possession and eventually found the winner.

For Lionel Messi, it was a night of frustration. The 2022 World Cup winner was unable to inspire Argentina to become the first nation in 64 years to defend the trophy, and the final may have marked his last appearance in the competition.

The final was as much spectacle off the pitch as on it. President Donald Trump arrived by helicopter ahead of kick-off, while the first-ever World Cup half-time show featured performances from Madonna, Shakira, Burna Boy and Justin Bieber, stretching the break to 27 minutes.

Earlier, Spain had created the clearer chances. Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal both forced Martinez into saves in a first half short on clear-cut opportunities.

Spain’s victory, 16 years after their first World Cup triumph, leaves Argentina to rue missed chances and what might have been. For La Roja, it is confirmation that a new golden generation has arrived and this time, with Torres as the extra-time hero.

FIFA is Becoming a Lawless Body

— UEFA

According to a UEFA statement on Monday, FIFA has “crossed a red line” with the controversial decision to suspend US star Folarin Balogun one game ban for a year.

The European football’s governing body said this after the intervention of Donald Trump, permitting Balogun to play in the co-hosts’ World Cup last 16 match with Belgium later on Monday.

“Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line,” read UEFA’s strongly worded statement.

“Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not.”

UEFA warned of the ramifications for the sport as a whole.

“Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws,” the statement added.

“A tournament is never a pure standalone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole.

“We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

Meanwhile, Balogun has scored three goals at the World Cup, was set to miss the clash in Seattle after receiving a straight red card following a video review for stepping on a Bosnia-Herzegovina defender’s foot in the round-of-32 match the US won 2-0.
Under FIFA rules, a straight red card automatically triggers a one-game ban.
Trump called FIFA chief Gianni Infantino asking him to review Balogun’s punishment, two sources familiar with the matter told AFP.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also publicly called for the card to be rescinded.

The decision to suspend the ban was taken by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.

World football’s governing body said Sunday the ban will now be suspended for a year, in a stunning move for which no specific explanation was offered.

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The Belgians were stupefied by the ruling.

“I didn’t know that at the FIFA World Cup, the 5th of July is now the 1st of April, and that it’s April Fool’s Day,” Belgium coach Rudi Garcia told reporters.
