–FG Increases TETFund research Grants from N64.2 bn to N10 bn

_FG begins payment of salary arrears owed staff of Unity Schs

The Tertiary Education Trust fund tetfund has announced the opening of its portal for concept-note submissions on Monday, August 31, 2026, with a submission deadline of October 15, 2026.

The Federal Government has approved N10 billion for the 2026 Grant Cycle of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF), representing a 64.2 per cent increase over the N6.09 billion committed to 174 research projects in the 2025 cycle.

TETFund disclosed this in its 2026 NRF Grant Cycle Call for Concept Notes, signed by its Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono.

According to Echono, the increased funding aims to strengthen research and boost the capacity of Nigerian researchers.

It stressed that “there will be no extension” when the October deadline expires.

The Fund said the N10 billion would support research across 30 prioritised thematic areas, grouped under Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting research areas.

According to the Fund, access to the grant would begin with Principal Investigators (PIs) submitting concept notes, with only applicants whose projects are deemed fundable proceeding to the full proposal stage.

It said lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria were eligible to apply, while multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research involving scholars from different disciplines would be encouraged.

“The PI must be institution-based, with the PI’s institution regarded as the Coordinating Institution and guarantor of proper application of the funds for the project.

“Thereafter, the successful proposals for the award of grant will be presented to the Board of Trustees of TETFund for approval and disbursement of funds,” it said.

The Fund added that the PI must be institution-based, with the PI’s institution serving as the coordinating institution and guarantor of the proper application of funds.

The application process, TETFund explained, would be conducted entirely online through the NRF portal.

It stressed that all submitted concept notes would be evaluated by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC), after which successful PIs would be invited to develop and submit full proposals.

Relatedly, the Federal Government has resumed the payment of three years’ outstanding salary arrears owed to teachers and education officers in the Federal Unity Colleges.

More than 2,000 affected workers began receiving the payments on August 28, 2026, following years of waiting for the government to clear the backlog.

The affected employees were among those recruited into the Federal Government Unity Colleges between 2019 and 2021, whose salaries subsequently accumulated into arrears.

Recall that the Nigerian government had commenced payment of the arrears in November 2025.

The development comes three years after the affected teachers protested at the Federal Ministry of Education, demanding payment of their outstanding salaries after several appeals to the government allegedly went unacknowledged.

However, a credible source at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation confirmed that the payments had resumed, saying bank alerts had started reaching the accounts of the affected workers.

ASUU Warns TETFund: Your Discriminatory Policy Against Some Varsities is Direct Violation of TETFund Act 2011

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFund) new policy of classifying public universities into “tenable” and “non-tenable” categories for the agency’s Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) local postgraduate scholarship scheme has been criticised as discriminatory by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The union described the policy as an overreach of TETFund’s statutory functions and a threat to the foundational policy for public tertiary education in Nigeria.

ASUU National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, stated that the classification was discriminatory and outside the agency’s mandate.

He argued further that the approach undermines equity and fairness. Piwuna reminded the leadership of TETFund that its core responsibility, as stipulated by law, is to manage, disburse and monitor the two per cent education tax collected from registered companies in Nigeria.

In addition, he stressed, those funds are meant to rehabilitate, restore and consolidate tertiary institutions across the country, and not to determine which institutions students and scholars should attend.

He warned that if the policy is allowed to stand, it will lead to massive overcrowding in a few “preferred” or tenable universities while others tagged untenable are deserted.

He warned that the policy would lead to a sharp decline in student enrolment at the affected universities and demoralise senior academics and researchers at those institutions.

Instead of sidelining some universities, ASUU asked:

“Why not upgrade all first to third generation public universities where experienced academics are likely to be found to the expected standard?”

Piwuna condemned deploying the agency’s resources to institutionalise a discriminatory policy that violates the TETFund Act 2011, warning that:

“ASUU shall continue to oppose any policy that makes TETFund vulnerable to personal and group interests in whatever guise.”

The Management of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, MOAU, has disowned a viral social media publication announcing Friday, 29th and Saturday, 30th August, 2026 as dates for the 2026/2027 Post-UTME Computer-Based Screening Test.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, Barnabas Terfa Hemba, and released on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the University described the circulating publication as “NOT an official communication” of MOAU.

The University clarified that it has not yet fixed or released any date for the Post-UTME screening exercise.

“Consequently, prospective candidates, parents, guardians and the general public are advised not to rely on the dates contained in the circulating publication or make any arrangements based on it,” the statement read.

According to the Management, arrangements for the screening exercise are still being finalised. The approved date, schedule, venues and other relevant details will be officially announced once concluded.

The University strongly advised candidates to disregard any unverified information concerning Post-UTME screening dates and to rely only on announcements issued through MOAU’s official communication channels.

“The University regrets any inconvenience or confusion the unauthorised publication may have caused and urges members of the public to be wary of misleading information circulating on social media,” the Registrar stated.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no Post-UTME screening date has been officially released by the University as of the date of this statement. The public will be duly informed when the official date is approved and released.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has introduced a new way candidates can now verify and upload their O’level results from the comfort of their homes without having to visit a Computer-Based Test centre.

JAMB’s Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, announced this Monday in a statement shared on X.

Benjamin said the Board had facilitated the verification of candidates’ O’level results directly from the examination bodies responsible for conducting the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, beginning with the West African Examinations Council.

He said candidates could now upload their O’level results from home while JAMB verifies the results directly with the issuing examination bodies. The statement announced:

“UPLOAD OF O’LEVEL RESULTS FROM THE COMFORT OF CANDIDATES’ HOMES.”

“As a responsive organisation committed to providing efficient and accessible services, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has facilitated the verification of candidates’ O’Level results directly from the various examination bodies responsible for conducting the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), beginning with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

“Consequently, candidates can now upload their O’Level results from the comfort of their homes, while the Board undertakes the verification of such results directly with the issuing examination bodies.”

The initiative is aimed at making its services easier, faster and more convenient for candidates, according to the Board.

“The initiative is part of the Board’s renewed commitment to making services easier, faster, safer and more convenient for candidates.

“By using technology to reduce unnecessary visits to CBT centres, queues and manual processes, JAMB is putting candidate ease of service delivery at the centre of its operations.”

JAMB said the arrangement would also help address problems associated with manual O’level result uploads, including misplaced or mixed-up paper results, unverified or fraudulent results and errors in entering subjects and grades.

“The new arrangement also addresses challenges associated with manual O’Level result uploads, including misplaced or mixed-up paper results, presentation of unverified or fraudulent results, and errors in the manual entry of subjects and grades,” Benjamin said.

Through the integration of JAMB’s e-Facility platform with examination bodies, results can now be verified against the records of the issuing examination bodies before being downloaded into candidates’ profiles.

Steps to verify your O’level result

  1. Visit buyresultsverificationcode.ng.
  2. Enter your NIN and click “Verify NIN.”
  3. Select the desired number of sittings and the appropriate examination body or bodies, then click “Continue.”
  4. Enter your email address and GSM number, then click “Pay Now.”
  5. Make payment using your debit card or bank transfer.
  6. After successful payment, enter your examination details, including:

Examination number
Examination series
Examination year

  1. Verify your result or results for the number of sittings selected and obtain your Verification Code.

How to upload your O’level result

  1. Send “VERIFY” followed by your Verification Code to 55019 or 66019.
  2. Your result will be uploaded and you will receive a notification.
  3. Candidates with two sittings will be notified to visit their profile on JAMB e-Facility.

Candidates must select a minimum of five subjects and a maximum of nine subjects, with no subject selected more than once.

  1. Click “Apply the O’Level Results.”
  2. Upon successful upload, you will receive a notification confirming the submission.

JAMB added that the verification service would provide candidates with a convenient alternative, particularly during periods of high patronage and network challenges at CBT centres.

Benjamin said the initiative reflected the commitment of JAMB’s sixth Registrar, Prof Segun Aina, to a more customer-oriented and technology-driven service delivery system.

“The Board will continue to deploy technology and collaborate with relevant examination and government agencies to make its services simpler, safer and more accessible to candidates,” he said.
