Grieving Plateau Mother Plaves Cutlass in Slai Son’s Coffin … To Avenge His Death
From Felix Umande, Makurdi
In a scene that has gripped the nation and reignited outrage over unending killings in Plateau State, a bereaved mother, Mrs. Favour Ayuba, was filmed placing a cutlass inside the coffin of her son, Promise Gideon, urging the deceased to avenge his own murder at the hands of suspected terrorists.
The heart-wrenching video, which went viral on Friday, shows Mrs. Ayuba speaking in an emotion-laden voice as she leans over her son’s casket during burial preparations.
She said she had not eaten since the attack on Palm Sunday, March 29, when gunmen stormed Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area, killing over 30 residents, including Promise, and leaving several others injured.
“If you want me to forget, baby, avenge your death. I carried you in my womb for nine months; you suckled at my breast. Baby, I trust you, revenge for me, revenge for me. Please, wherever they are, follow them and avenge your death,” Mrs. Ayuba said, her voice breaking as she placed the cutlass beside her son’s body.
The symbolic act gifting the weapon on what would have been Promise’s birthday has been widely interpreted as an expression of raw grief, helplessness and a desperate cry for justice in a region repeatedly ravaged by armed attacks.
Mrs. Ayuba had earlier appeared in another viral clip shortly after the March 29 attack, clutching the lifeless, blood-stained body of Promise, who was cut down by the assailants’ bullets.
Witnesses said Promise was among worshippers and residents who were attacked without provocation as they marked Palm Sunday.
Community leaders in Angwan Rukuba described the latest killings as part of a pattern of violence that has persisted in Plateau for years, with repeated calls for improved security and accountability.
The video of Mrs. Ayuba’s graveside plea has drawn an outpouring of sympathy on social media, but also deepened public anger over what many describe as the state’s failure to protect citizens and bring perpetrators to justice.
For Mrs. Ayuba, the cutlass in her son’s coffin was both a farewell gift and a final, anguished appeal from a mother who said she has lost not just her child, but her peace.

DSS Dissatisfied with Life Sentence handed Ansaru Commanders: To appeal sentence
By Nick Ibe, Abuja
DSS is prepared to appeal to achieve death penalty for the two Ansaru terrorist group commanders given life sentences in Abuja were given by Emeka Nwite. The were sentenced on Monday after they pleaded guilty to a 32-count terrorism charge.
The convicts: Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar, described as the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, and Mahmud al-Nigeri (a.k.a Malam Mamuda), his deputy and chief of staff.
The judge handed down the sentence after the convicts changed their plea from not guilty to guilty and, through their lawyer, appealed for leniency.
A senior DSS official, speaking after the judgement, said the agency considers the punishment inadequate given the gravity of the offences.
According to the official, the two men had initially indicated they would plead guilty but later changed their position around the period pupils and teachers were abducted in Oriire LGA of Oyo state by suspected members of the same group.
“For the nearly 60 days the kidnappers held on to the pupils and teachers of Oriire, the Ansaru commanders in our custody changed,” the official said.
“One of the top conditions the abductors gave was the unconditional release of these same Ansaru commanders in exchange for the Oriire kidnap victims.”
The DSS official said the defendants, who had earlier pleaded not guilty, later told the court they were undecided on the plea they intended to enter.
“Justice Nwite even had to hand them an ultimatum to make up their minds on or before Monday’s sitting.
“After the Oriire rescue, they came to court to plead guilty to all the charges.
“Allowing the two terror commanders walk away with life sentences will not serve the cause of justice for the two Oriire teachers beheaded by their abductors.
“The reason the terrorists beheaded the two Oriire teacher’s was to put pressure on government to release these two Ansaru commanders.
“It, therefore, wouldn’t be fair to see two men beheaded and their families are made to live with the losses without adequately bringing the culprits to book.”
