2027 Poll Success: INEC Inaugurates Youth Ambassadors
By Isa Abdul, Abuja
As part of efforts to strengthen its engagement with young Nigerians and promote informed, peaceful and responsible participation in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated a new set of Youth Ambassadors .
The investiture ceremony brought together National Commissioners, senior officials of the Commission, representatives of government agencies, development partners, returning Youth Ambassadors and the newly selected ambassadors.
Welcoming participants, the Chairman, Outreach and Partnership Committee (OPC), Prof. Kunle Ajayi, described the initiative as an important platform for strengthening the relationship between the Commission and young Nigerians, one of the most important constituencies in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Prof. Ajayi said the appointment of the Youth Ambassadors was not merely the conferment of a title but a mandate carrying responsibility. He urged the ambassadors to use their influence to strengthen electoral participation, promote peaceful conduct and ensure that young Nigerians have access to accurate information about the electoral process.
Representing the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, at the ceremony, National Commissioner Prof. Rhoda Gumus said the Commission recognised the leadership, influence and capacity of the new Youth Ambassadors to engage other young Nigerians.
She said Nigeria’s large youth population had significant implications for democracy and elections, adding that the numerical strength of young Nigerians could only become meaningful when matched by informed, organised and responsible participation.
Prof. Gumus urged the ambassadors to go beyond simply encouraging young Nigerians to vote and instead listen to the reasons for disengagement from the electoral process, including lack of information, distrust, political frustration, previous experiences and misunderstanding of electoral procedures.
She also charged them to help address misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media, urging them to adopt the principle: “Verify before you amplify.”
The INEC representative warned against the manipulation of young people for electoral violence, stressing that young Nigerians recruited into violent activities often become victims through death, injuries, arrest and the destruction of their future.
“Do not allow anyone to use your youth against your future,” she said, adding that political competition should never require young Nigerians to fight, destroy or kill one another.
She further encouraged the ambassadors to promote constructive engagement between young voters, political parties and candidates by encouraging young Nigerians to ask questions about issues affecting their lives, including employment, education, security, economic opportunities and skills development.

Nigeria @66: CAN Tells FG to Let Economic reforms Reach Every Nigerian Home
By Nick Ibe, Abuja
The Federal Government has been urged to ensure the country’s economic recovery translates into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, said this in a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on Thursday. He pointed out that the success of economic reforms should ultimately be measured by whether families can afford basic necessities, young people can secure decent jobs and communities can live in safety.
The body welcomed the shift from an era of economic reforms to an era of prosperity, while cautioning that economic statistics alone should not be the measure of progress.
CAN implored government to make reductions in the cost of food, transportation and energy as priorities, stressing that Nigerians who had endured years of economic hardship deserved meaningful relief in their daily lives.
CAN also advocated stronger social protection for vulnerable Nigerians, including improved access to education, healthcare and affordable credit.
It urged the government to ensure that such interventions were transparently administered and protected from diversion, insisting that prosperity that failed to reach ordinary households remained incomplete.
On security, the association said there could be no meaningful prosperity in an environment where citizens were unable to farm, trade, travel or sleep peacefully because of fear.
It therefore called for sustained action to protect lives, secure communities and restore public confidence across the country.
The association also cautioned political actors ahead of the 2027 elections against presenting politicians as messiahs, while urging Christians to exercise their freedom to support or criticise political candidates without dragging the name of Jesus Christ into partisan rivalry.
“No politician is the Messiah,” CAN stated, warning against the use of Christianity and the name of Jesus Christ as a political weapon.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to remaining a non-partisan moral voice in the country, saying it would continue to commend what was right, speak when citizens were hurting and hold leaders to the values of justice, accountability and compassion.
CAN thus congratulated Nigerians on the Independence anniversary and called for a new phase in which the promise of national prosperity would be reflected in the everyday lives of citizens.
