Stop naming streets after your friends, Wike warns AMAC chairman
By Wumi Tewogbade, Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday warned Abuja Municipal Council Chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, to stop naming infrastructure he didn’t build after his friends and cronies without permission from the administration.
Wike stated this during Day 12 of Projects Flag-Off of the provision of Engineering Infrastructure to Outstanding Layouts within Guzape A09 Lots I & II district and AIT Neighbourhood in Asokoro A04 District, Abuja.
He insisted that streets must be named after those that have contributed to the development of Abuja or Nigeria.
According to Wike, “But let me say something today clearly. Where is the chairman of AMAC? But let me say it now. We cannot be doing roads, putting in infrastructure, you wake up in the morning, I don’t know who writes to you. Before I wake up, you name the streets of the roads we are doing, roads we are putting money. Put your street names where you do roads. I mean, it is very, very funny. You wake up, when somebody writes to you and pays you money, before you know it, it’s Dr. so so Street or Professor so so Street, or Bishop so so Street, and Madam so so Street, in a road we are suffering, and looking for money to provide infrastructure. Better go and refund them their money.
“We have to name streets after those who have contributed to the development of the area. You don’t just wake up, because somebody has ₦2 million, he pays to you, then you come and have the name of a street. That is not possible. You can go and name them in the satellite towns”.
The FCT Minister insisted, “But in cities here, government must know whom are you naming the street after. You don’t come because of somebody, you don’t know where the money comes from, then you come and name very important streets in their name. We will not do that again.
“If there are people who have paid you money, make sure you do the roads too. Provide infrastructure and name the street after them”.
Even where I’m living, I woke up one early morning, I saw the name of somebody. I said, as a Minister, I’m living here. That is not the way it’s supposed to be.
Tomorrow, you may see footballers or our sports people who may have done well and it is said, name this street after them in order to remember them tomorrow for what they have done for the country, for what they have done city.
The FCT Minister took a swipe at the past government for not putting enough infrastructure in place before now.
“That’s why we always say that if previous government took it seriously and were committed to make sure our city, our capital city, looks like other cities of the world, by now we wouldn’t have been talking about completing these other layouts.
“Now that a new government has come, a new government is determined to change the narrative, we have no choice but to continue to support that government. So, at the end of the day, we will benefit from the dividends of democracy”, he said.
The FCT Minister said, he has already instructed the Mandate secretary to education to roll out the names of schools that have been rehabilitated by this administration as soon as possible.
Speaking earlier, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, noted that Mr. President’s vision of ensuring that every district of the FCT is accessible and well-serviced continues to inspire the administration’s efforts, noting that today’s commissioning was another testimony of that resolve.
Mahmoud described the provision of engineering infrastructure within Guzape AO9 and the AIT Neighbourhood in Asokoro AO4 as of immense importance.
She said, “Beyond opening up these districts for development, the road networks and associated infrastructure will enhance connectivity between neighbourhoods, reducing travel time and decongesting other adjoining routes.”
The Minister, therefore, commended members of the National Assembly for their continued support in appropriations and legislative backings, just as she also applauded the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his dynamic and purposeful leadership.

We will choke them with what we have done in education – Wike
By Wumi Tewogbade, Abuja
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike,on Tuesday, said his administration has concluded arrangements to commence the commissioning of projects that have been concluded in Education Sector.
Wike stated this during the commissioning of the newly provided Engineering Infrastructure in Wuye District Abuja.
After 20 days of flag offs and commissioning, he said he will take a break and come back for commissioning of projects in the education sector.
He said, “After this series of flag-offs and commissionings, we’ll take a short break. Twenty days of events is not a small feat. Afterward, we’ll turn our focus fully to education. For twenty more days, we’ll show Nigerians what we have done in that sector — and it will surprise many. Our work is not only about roads and infrastructure; it also extends to education.
Taking a swipe at the last administration, he said the project was awarded in 2009 but President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, came in and completed the project.
“Under previous administrations, projects were abandoned. But today, those roads are being dualised and completed. President Tinubu has transformed not just the city but the satellite towns as well.
“People often come to us to say this contract was awarded long ago. Yes, it was awarded in 2009, and yet it remained abandoned because there was no payment. From that time till 2023, nothing was done.
“When this administration came in, the President took immediate steps to revive it. The entire Gwagwalada district — with hundreds of hectares of land — was developed to include road networks, sectoral arterials, tunnels, water and electricity. The President said clearly: I have come to bring renewed hope to the people.
“Many had lost faith, but he restored it. Within one year in office, major projects were completed — including the interchange that had caused traffic chaos in the area. Today, the entire district is fully developed”,he said.
He therefore challenged, “If there’s any administration since the creation of the Federal Capital Territory that has done more than what we are doing, let them speak up now. Their silence says it all — this is leadership that is committed, leadership that is changing lives”.
He commended the management and staff of FCT for all their supports and hardwork and urged them to be proud of themselves anywhere they go.
“Let me thank everyone working with the FCTA. You’ve done well. Stand tall and be proud of your efforts. You’ve broken records. Wherever you go, carry your shoulders high — tell anyone who doubts it that the FCT is working”, he noted .
In her remarks, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project is about giving communities the infrastructure they deserve and the comfort they have long awaited.
In her words, “As we celebrate this achievement, let us remember that every milestone is a promise kept, and every completion is a beginning anew.”
Mahmoud, therefore, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope Agenda continues to illuminate every corner of the Federal Capital Territory.
In the same vein, Mahmoud extended the administration’s profound appreciation to the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his exemplary leadership and relentless drive to deliver projects that touch lives and uplift communities.

Wike constructs over 600 bed hostels for Bwari law school
By Wumi Tewogbade, Abuja
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Monday, flag off the construction of 300 capacity male and female hostels at Nigerian Law School, Bwari Abuja.
Wike said he was there to fulfil the promise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, made in December last year and assured that the two hostels would be completed in 12 months.
He emphasised the importance of completing the hostels on time, so that the school would be able to admit more students .
According to the minister, “And that is why the school is unable to accommodate the number that are being turned down from the various universities. That promise he made was in December. Today, we are here to fulfill that promise that Mr. President made. This shows that when you have good leadership, there is nothing difficult in achieving results, and Mr. President has shown leadership”.
He added that Mr. President, has also given approval for the construction of a bigger auditorium for the school.
He said, “I was discussing with my son, who by the grace of God was called to bar in the last Call to Bar ceremony, and he told me that, is like they have completed the auditorium. So I said, now that we are providing hostels that will take almost 600 students, it will mean that they will not admit more students. He said, well, it will not necessarily follow. I said, so what will happen? He said, well, that auditorium, will likely not take everybody. I said, okay, it means they require another auditorium so that they can. And so, luckily for us, I was privileged to be with Mr. President last night, and I tabled this to him, he said, go back, make sure another auditorium is built for Nigerian law school.
“Let me assure you, the 12 months is 12 months. The contractors are aware that we will not accept variations or anything else”, he noted.
The Director General, Nigerian Law School, Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, commended President Tinubu for approving the projects, assuring that the hostels will address the challenge of accommodation for students.
“This hostels will go a long way in assisting the Nigerian Law School to fulfilling its mandate. We are not taking this gesture for granted.
“On behalf of the Council of Legal Education, Nigerian Law School, management, staff and students, I respectfully thank His Excellency, President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for approving this project “, he said.
