The Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Monday evening, said no agreement has been reached between JUAC and the FCTA management on any of the demands presented.

This was contained in a statement signed by Comr.Abdullahi Umar Saleh Secretary, JUAC – FCTA, in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the staff of FCT have been on an indefinite strike since Monday morning over unresolved welfare concerns.

JUAC therefore said the meeting with FCT Head of Service and security director ended in a deadlocked, urging its members to continue with the strike.

The statement reads, “The Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration hereby categorically rejects and dissociates itself from the misleading press release issued by the FCTA through the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Mr. Lere Olayinka, claiming that 10 out of the 14 demands of workers have been met.

“JUAC wishes to state clearly and unequivocally as follows: No formal agreement has been reached between JUAC and the FCTA management on any of the demands presented”.

He said no staff has received any alert on eage awards etc, “The claims of payment of wage awards, rural allowance,2023 promotion arrears and compliance with Public Service Rules are false, premature, and intended to misinform the public and staff.

“JUAC has not suspended, withdrawn or relaxed its position on the industrial action because none of the core demands has been conclusively implemented or verified.

“The statement credited to the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-FCTA) does not represent the collective position of workers under JUAC and cannot be used to justify the false narrative that issues have been resolved.

“Matters relating to unpaid promotion arrears, NHF and pension remittances, illegal tenure elongation, flawed promotion examination process, intimidation of staff, lack of training and salary portal restrictions remain largely unattended to.

“The attempt by management to shift responsibility for statutory deductions to workers is unacceptable and contrary to established public service financial regulations”.

He noted, “The ongoing strike action remains lawful, justified and in full compliance with labour laws, having followed due process after expiration of the 7-day ultimatum.
JUAC therefore urges: Members of staff, public and media to disregard the FCTA press release as it does not reflect the true situation.

“All staff should remain resolute, united and committed to the collective struggle until all demands are fully implemented.

“The FCTA management to stop issuing propaganda and engage sincerely with workers to resolve the outstanding issues.

“JUAC remains open to genuine dialogue but will not succumb to misinformation, intimidation or divide-and-rule tactics”.

DSS Dissatisfied with Life Sentence handed Ansaru Commanders: To appeal sentence

By Nick Ibe, Abuja

DSS is prepared to appeal to achieve death penalty for the two Ansaru terrorist group commanders given life sentences in Abuja were given by Emeka Nwite. The were sentenced on Monday after they pleaded guilty to a 32-count terrorism charge.

The convicts: Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar, described as the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, and Mahmud al-Nigeri (a.k.a Malam Mamuda), his deputy and chief of staff.

The judge handed down the sentence after the convicts changed their plea from not guilty to guilty and, through their lawyer, appealed for leniency.

A senior DSS official, speaking after the judgement, said the agency considers the punishment inadequate given the gravity of the offences.

According to the official, the two men had initially indicated they would plead guilty but later changed their position around the period pupils and teachers were abducted in Oriire LGA of Oyo state by suspected members of the same group.

“For the nearly 60 days the kidnappers held on to the pupils and teachers of Oriire, the Ansaru commanders in our custody changed,” the official said.

“One of the top conditions the abductors gave was the unconditional release of these same Ansaru commanders in exchange for the Oriire kidnap victims.”

The DSS official said the defendants, who had earlier pleaded not guilty, later told the court they were undecided on the plea they intended to enter.

“Justice Nwite even had to hand them an ultimatum to make up their minds on or before Monday’s sitting.

“After the Oriire rescue, they came to court to plead guilty to all the charges.

“Allowing the two terror commanders walk away with life sentences will not serve the cause of justice for the two Oriire teachers beheaded by their abductors.

“The reason the terrorists beheaded the two Oriire teacher’s was to put pressure on government to release these two Ansaru commanders.

“It, therefore, wouldn’t be fair to see two men beheaded and their families are made to live with the losses without adequately bringing the culprits to book.”
